US federal regulations require a second member of the flight crew to be in the cockpit at all times

US federal regulations require a second member of the flight crew to be in the cockpit at all times.

If necessary, a flight attendant is required to be in the cockpit when one of the pilots leaves it.

Unlike in the US, European regulations do not provide for two people to be in the cockpit at all times.

Having this regulation may have prevented the crash of the German Airbus A320 in March of 2015 which crashed in the French Alps killing everyone on board.
