Macy’s Red Star Tattoo Logo

The name Rowland Hussey Macy might not be too familiar until you make the connection to the department store chain. 

Rowland Hussey became the R. H. of R.H. Macy’s. 

Well, young R.H was born on Nantucket Island, up in New England. At the age of 15 he was working on a whaling ship and, presumably, got to see a bit more of the world. 

Somewhere along the line, he put in at a port of call and, in the tradition sailing men then and now, he got a tattoo. 

In his case, it was a red star on his hand. 

Fast forward a few dozen years to the store he opened in Manhattan in 1858 and there was that red star as the symbol for Macy’s Department Store.
