In 1897, a newlywed woman, Elva Zona Heaster, was found dead in her home.
Although her death was
attributed to natural causes, her mother’s insistence that she had been
visited by the woman’s ghost compelled authorities to reopen the case, at
which time an autopsy revealed the woman had suffered a broken neck.
Under the
guise of emotional grief, the husband kept people away from the body of his
“beloved” wife, tied a scarf around her neck claiming it to be “her favorite”,
and went to other lengths to veil the fact that her neck was broken.
