In ancient Egypt it was often used as a form of payment when money was scarce and in Medieval times millions were saved by its cleanliness. When water was contaminated with bacteria, as was extremely common, fermenting it into beer killed the bacteria and made it safe to drink. It allowed Louis Pasteur to discover bacteria, and has sold billions of revenue in its history.
Were it not for beer, many of the founding fathers of America would not have met because almost all of them brewed their own. Beer has impacted almost every facet of society, and were it not for the drink the world we live in would certainly be very different.
