Printing the phrase "In God We Trust" on U.S. currency was a mandate handed down by Abraham Lincoln's Treasury Secretary Salmon Chase.

During his presidency, Theodore Roosevelt attempted to remove the slogan because he, as a devout Christian, felt that putting God on money was a sacrilege.
