The youngest grandmother in the world is 23

At 23 most people aren't ready to even begin thinking of having kids, let alone having grandkids! But that wasn't the case for Rifca Stanescu from a small Romanian town.

At 12 years old Rifca gave birth to her daughter Maria. When Maria was 11, she had her first child. This means that her mother was only 23, making Rifca a grandmother and Rifca’s mother a great-grandmother at 40.

The family belongs to a Romanian traveller community where it is common to marry and have children early.

In fact, Rifca had been engaged since she was 2, but at 11 eloped with her now husband and was pregnant within six months. Rifca says she hoped Maria would break the cycle and get an education, but is nonetheless excited to be a grandmother.
