The ‘Wedding March’ is from an opera and it’s sung right before a bunch of murders happen

The Bridal Chorus is from the 1850 German opera, Lohengrin, by composer Richard Wagner. It is the march sung right before the bride enters many formal weddings throughout the western world.

In English, we often call the song “Here Comes the Bride” or “Wedding March”. The song is actually pretty inappropriate to use during a wedding. You see, in the opera, the song is sung by the women of the wedding party after the ceremony as they accompany Elsa, the bride, to the wedding chambers. Plus, the marriage between Elsa and Lohengrin is a failure from the get go.

The song is supposed to be positive at weddings, but in the opera the song comes right before several of the wedding guests are murdered. Some pastors adamantly oppose the song being played at weddings, due to the operatic context of the song. They also oppose the pagan elements in the opera created by Wagner.
