Telephones did not ring when they were first invented

Telephones used to not ring to indicate that a call was being received.

The first person to come out with this technology was Thomas Watson, Alexander Graham Bell's assistant and the first person to ever received a telephone call.

He came up with the idea of including a ringer with each phone, so that a person could indicate that they were calling someone.

Another thing that Watson came up with was an off switch when the telephone was hung up.

If you think about it, this means that the first telephones were always on and the only way to know if someone was calling you was to pick it up and listen.
