Pope Innocent VIII condemned cats as evil

During the time of the Spanish Inquisition, Pope Innocent VIII condemned cats as evil and thousands of cats were burned.

Unfortunately, the widespread killing of cats led to an explosion of the rat population, which exacerbated the effects of the Black Death.

The plague epidemic swept through Europe from 1348 through 1351, killing an estimated 25–60% of Europeans. Some estimates are as high as 2/3 of the population.
