When Jesse Owens won a gold medal, FDR snubbed him for being black, while Hitler congratulated him

One of the most famous athletes in American history, Jesse Owens won four gold medals in the 1936 Summer Olympics. Hitler was using the Berlin Olympics to display the power and resurgence of Nazi Germany.

Widespread propaganda was dispersed in Germany exalting the superiority of the Aryan race and depicting those of African descent as inferior.

For this reason it was all the more significant that Hitler’s athletes were not only defeated by an American, but a black American.

Owen’s later said that when he walked by the Fuhrer Hitler waved amiably in congratulations. While his racial ideas were well known, he was still polite enough to acknowledge Owens. Not so much can be said for our own president FDR.

After returning home, Jesse Owens said the president never thanked him or even acknowledged his victory.

Roosevelt was nervous that he would lose southern voters if he did congratulate Owens, and since it was an election year he believe it rational to ignore one of the greatest American athletes.
