Nancy Grace is an American legal commentator, television host, television journalist and former prosecutor. She is the host of Nancy Grace, a nightly celebrity news and current affairs show on HLN and was the former host of Court TV’s Closing Arguments. She has a distinctive interviewing style that mixes questioning with multimedia statistic displays.
She has been criticized for sensationalizing sensitive stories. Amazingly, two of Nancy Grace’s interviewees committed suicide after their interviews. The first was Melinda Duckett in 2006. Grace interviewed Duckett less than two weeks after Duckett’s two-year old son went missing. Grace pressed her about where Duckett was around the time of her son’s disappearance and chastised her for being vague and skirting questions.
The next day, before the taping of the show aired, Duckett shot herself. Her family blamed the media scrutiny, particularly Grace’s interview, for the suicide. Duckett’s estate asserted a wrongful death claim against Grace, and they later settled out of court.
The second suicide was that of Toni Medrano, a 29-year-old Minnesota mom in 2012. When Grace interviewed Medrano, she dubbed her “vodka mom” because Medrano allegedly killed her newborn after a night of heavy drinking. Medrano set herself on fire and later died from complications from that incident.
