The famous Carnegie Hall was built mainly because the steel baron Andrew Carnegie felt responsible for the 1889 Jonestown Flood, due to his involvement with the South Fork Hunting & Fishing Club.
At the time it was the largest peacetime disaster to strike the United States, killing over 2,200 people.
Prior to the flood, speculators had purchased the abandoned reservoir, made less than well-engineered repairs to the old dam, raised the lake level, built cottages and a clubhouse, and created the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club.
