A Japanese girl died for being late to class

A Japanese girl named Ryoko Ishida died in 1990 as a result of being tardy to class. How could such a thing happen, you ask? Ishida was running late for the first time ever in her school career, and arrived at school just as the 500 pound iron gates were closing. She tried to gain entry but was crushed against a concrete wall and died two hours later. Apparently, the school had been cracking down on latecomers, and the teacher who closed the gates claimed he didn’t see anybody coming.

The principal stopped short of blaming the students for the tragedy saying, “If more of you would come 10 minutes earlier, teachers wouldn't have to shout, 'Don't be late! I have no intention of denying my responsibility, but I would like all of you to think again about your basic lifestyle." Japan is notorious for its strict (and sometimes humiliating) policies where education is concerned, but this incident was a needless tragedy that sparked outrage in Japan and all around the world.
