Happy Father's Day!

Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., is credited with the origin of Father's Day.

Raised by her father after her mother's death during childbirth, Dodd decided in 1909 that fathers should be accorded a day like Mother's Day.

Dodd's father was born in June, so she lobbied Spokane-area churches to honor fathers during the month.

The first Father's Day was celebrated in 1910 in Spokane, Washington.

President Woodrow Wilson approved of the idea of a national Father's Day in 1916, but did not sign a proclamation for the holiday.

President Lyndon Johnson declared the third Sunday in June would be Father's Day in 1966.

President Richard Nixon made the Father's Day proclamation permanent in 1972.
