The community began in 1903 with the construction by a Mr. Ran Woods and others, of a two room log schoolhouse on the site.
The settlement was allegedly named by Mr. Woods who felt that the bugs at the site were so numerous, that they were a never ending "tussle" for him to deal with.
The name "Bugtussle" was also the name of the town where the fictitious Beverly Hillbillies of TV series fame, had once lived before moving to California.
