Toyota had to change the name of the MR2

In the early 1980s, Toyota came out with a two-seat car called the MR2. Known for their practical, family-friendly cars, this model was out of character for Toyota. The MR2 was more sports car than mini van. Its most important feature was its light body. The name “MR2” stands for “mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-seater.”

The MR2 was going to be the first mass-produced mid-engined car to come from a Japanese manufacturer.

In Japan, it was alright for it to be marketed under the name “MR2,” but this name didn’t fly so well in France.

In France, the pronunciation of “MR2” is very close to the French words “est merdeux,” which means: it is shitty. Needless to say, Toyota would not be happy if the name of their car was associated with such a phrase.
