Sleep tight - don't let the bedbugs bite

In the time period between 1565-mid 1600's, the Spanish settlers of Florida, in St. Augustine made their beds from a wood frame.

The had criss crossed ropes across the frame similar to our metal bed frames today.

When the ropes would get loose, their bedding would sink to the floor causing a very uncomfortable night's sleep.

If the ropes were tight, the person slept tight.

Their bedding was stuffed with moss and other plant materials that had bugs in it.

Therefore, it was very common to get bitten by bugs when you were asleep in your bed.

Hence, "Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite."   More Nutty Facts
